Sephora offers beauty enthusiasts and novices alike an unparalleled assortment of beauty from both classic and emerging brands, as well as a unique way to shop for them.
Sephora began opening stores inside JCPenney in October 2006. Today, there are Sephora locations in over 574 JCPenney stores across the country. Utilizing a smaller footprint than a standard Sephora store, each one is located in the center of the JCPenney store and features the signature Sephora look and beauty assortment.
As the exclusive beauty offering in JCPenney, Sephora inside JCPenney features products from more than 200 beauty brands. These include color from NARS, Bare Escentuals, MAKE UP FOR EVER and Urban Decay; innovative skincare lines such as Peter Thomas Roth, Shiseido, Ole Henriksen, Murad and Philosophy; face & body tools from Clarisonic; and fragrance offerings from Dior, DKNY, Marc Jacobs and Dolce & Gabbana.
Also featured is Sephora’s own collection of makeup, skincare, tools and accessories. Inside all Sephora inside JCPenney stores is the Beauty Studio, Sephora’s exclusive destination for free one-on-one beauty sessions with our experts.
JCPenney’s partnership with Sephora extends back 15 years. However, over the spring, the alliance between the beauty juggernaut and Plano, Texas-based chain appeared to be threatened: JCPenney filed a temporary restraining order against Sephora in an attempt to prevent it from purportedly exiting a long-term contract early, and Sephora responded with an emergency motion to dissolve. Ultimately, the two parties agreed to “mutually beneficial revisions” to their existing deal in an effort to settle the legal dispute.
Sephora currently operates about 650 shop-in-shops inside JCPenney’s outposts. According to the JCPenney spokesperson, their partnership “remains strong” and will continue until the end of the agreement in late 2022.
The pandemic has led many retailers to make tough choices to maintain financial stability, not least of all retailers like J.C. Penney, which was in financial trouble before the pandemic. Now, the coronavirus outbreak has raised tensions between the department store and one of the most successful parts of its business.
According to emailed comments from Credit Suisse analyst Michael Binetti, Sephora’s shop-in-shops have the highest productivity in J.C. Penney’s stores, and their closure would be a “big negative” for J.C. Penney. The department store seems to think so too.
